Barbara Miyuki Baron
Barbara Miyuki Baron is a contemporary artist known for her exploration of cultural identity, the connection between the viewer and the work, and the broader world of intuition and possibilities.
Barbara’s first solo exhibition Connections (2024) was held at the OAG Deutsche Gesellschaft für Natur- und Völkerkunde Ostasiens in Tokyo. The exhibition showcased a series of mixed-media paintings and photography employing traditional methods while incorporating contemporary innovations and delving into themes of connections beyond space and time.
In Connections4 (2024), held at Kōen in Nakameguro, she broadened this theme and curated an event that spanned music, performance, and art, and brought together a new generation of artists.
The daughter of a German father and a Japanese mother, Barbara is deeply connected to both her cultural heritages, which profoundly influence her work. She studied with Nürnberg artist Lucie Schaller, a period that inspired her artistic practice and marked her first experimentation with abstract painting. Nihonga, a Japanese painting style and technique, has also had a strong impact on her artistic development. Its interplay of the object in space, where the voids are not merely empty but filled with energy, and the use of gold, are now a strong feature of her work.
Over the years, Barbara has continued to cultivate her passion for continuous development and growth. She is a Neurographica coach, a creative coaching method that provides her clients with powerful tools for self-improvement, but also a way for her to continue to develop innovative techniques, enhance her creativity, and foster a deeper emotional and psychological connection to the creative process. She is a Mental Trainer for children and young people at the Deutsche Schule Tokyo Yokohama, where she helps students enhance their cognitive abilities, gain greater emotional insight, and improve their overall psychological well-being through techniques such as visualization and mindfulness.
